happy friday guys! once upon a time i used to spend my entire week looking forward to fridays, much like all of you i'm sure.. now a days, they often are my "sunday" because ben and i work lots of weekends. but.. it's all good because in almost exactly one month we leave for our wedding in punta cana and i'm over the moon excited. i can't believe it's almost here! i promise i'll eventually share some details about the wedding planning.. gotta wait until september though.. sorry!
anyways, today i want to share a recent trip we took to ogunquit, maine.. nantucket will always be my favorite place to visit, but ogunquit takes a close second (especially because you don't need to take a ferry or an airplane to get there). it's such a lovely little town.
so at the end of june, one of my friends was getting married in portland, maine and we wanted to make a weekend out of it.. but, we've been to portland lots of times and wanted to explore somewhere new. ogunquit is conveniently situated a little more than halfway between home and portland so we spent friday night there before heading farther north for the wedding on saturday. i'm soooo glad we did and i want to go back (except right now i'm a little tied up putting the finishing touches on our 3 weddings.. more on that later).
ogunquit is a small beach town filled with character.. so many cute restaurants and cafes, art galleries and unique shops.. the beach is on the smaller side and gets crowded but if you're like me, you just stay away during peak hours.. so much better to go early in the morning or in the evening when both the crowds and heat settle down. everything is a walk or bike ride away, the seafood is amazing.. the whole place is just lovely.
since we only had about 24 hours in ogunquit, we left home as early as we could (we always plan to leave super early.. and fail miserably) and arrived around lunch time. we headed straight to Hooks for some of the yummiest salsa, guac and tacos. the restaurant has a beachy, surfer, caribbean theme with a large deck for outdoor seating and distant views of the ocean. i felt like i was in margaritaville and, naturally, i didn't order a margarita. i found some sort of pineapple juice, coconut water and rum concoction which was delicious and ben ordered a spiked blueberry lemonade which was equally as delicious.
after lunch we drove to perkins cove (which is in perfect walking distance from town but we were on a time crunch) and explored the cliff walk. it's probably about a mile long and completely paved (sandals and strollers welcome). guys, the most amazing views. ever. i stopped at ever bend for more pictures which don't do it justice. perkins cove also has lots of little shops, a candy store, ice cream, and restaurants (see below).
then, of course, i convinced ben that we should get ice cream.
late afternoon we headed back to town to check into our hotel. we stayed at Meadowmere Resort and i was very impressed. the rooms are large and clean with small patios and a fireplace (sold), the bed is extremely comfortable, the gym is quite impressive for a hotel with a steam room and sauna and its super close to downtown. we each grabbed a glass of wine from the hotel bar to sip on while we got ready for dinner and then headed back to perkins cove.
we stopped for candy on the walk to dinner.. dessert.. duh!
we managed to plan dinner perfectly with the sunset and had the best views. the food at MC Perkins Cove was overpriced and nothing to write home about, but the views.. they were absolutely breathtaking.
i have no idea who these people are (besides in the way of my picture) but this was our view while we eat dinner.
i cropped all the people out.. i promise this is not a painting but it's magical.
we started off with oysters and we both got the dinner special which was tuna prepared two different ways. not sure i'd go back to this restaurant for the food.. but maybe the views. did i mention the views were spectacular?
we called it a night early and headed back to our comfy bed for a good night sleep. saturday morning i work up early for a run and to sit in the sauna.. turns out, you shouldn't bring your phone in a sauna.. it overheats. who knew?
then we got dressed and headed to breakfast before making the trip to portland. there were so many cute coffee shops.. it was hard to chose one.. but we ended up at Backyard Coffeehouse & Eatery and ate something delicious covered in sugar and a blueberry scone with our coffees. and then, since we had a little extra time and needed something halfway nutritious in our bodies we stopped at the Loveshack Juicery and shared a smoothie. completely well rounded breakfast.
24 hours were not nearly enough time in this quaint little town.. i can't wait to go back!
